In October 2019, as part of a series of events commemorating the CAVC’s 30th anniversary, the CAVC Bar Association hosted its Veterans Law at the U.S. Supreme Court event at the U.S. Supreme Court. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer provided opening remarks in the East Conference Room, recollecting his support for the creation of the CAVC and acknowledging the highly-specialized, fact-driven work the Court performs today.
CAVC Bar Association President Jenny J. Tang then led a discussion with three attorneys, who have all had veterans law cases decided by the Supreme Court: J. Michael Hannon, who argued Brown v. Gardner; Brian Wolfman, who argued Scarborough v. Principi; and Kenneth M. Carpenter, who represented the Appellant in Kisor v. Wilkie. The three panelists discussed their clients’ expectations and feelings about being the subject of a Supreme Court case, their thoughts on why they felt the Court granted certiorari for their cases, differences between practicing at the CAVC versus the Supreme Court, and opined on the impact of their cases on veterans law and on other legal fields.
Following the panel, attendees enjoyed luncheon in the West Conference room, followed by a lecture with a Supreme Court docent about the history of the Supreme Court building.
